Various Gymnastics Meets

Chloe has had a great gymnastics season.  She has medalled at every meet and improved her scores gradually over the season.

We've just started her in a once weekly private lesson with one of the USU gymnastics coaches, so she's excited to see even more progress.

Here are a few random pics from the season.

Her great coach at Altius - Jenn Campbell.

At one of her Salt Lake area meets.  (My mom and dad drove down for that one).

At the USU meet with her squad.  I don't know where her medals were in this shot.  Hmm.

CMH Heliskiing Trip - 2013

Stanton went on the skiing trip of a lifetime in February.  He went to Canada to HeliSki.

I can't even do the trip justice because 1) I didn't go, and 2) skiing at this level is pretty much my worst nightmare.  But for Stanton, it was heaven.

They flew into Calgary and then took at an 8 hour bus ride North to the Gothic Lodge.  (This was after the biggest giant fiasco of Stanton taking the wrong passport to the airport - he took his passport card instead of the actual book, which he found out at the airport is required for air travel - they wouldn't let him on his originally booked flight.  At the same time, I had a friend (Jared Day) visiting and when Cannon opened the door to let him in, Charlie ran out and ran away.  He was nowhere to be found.  I had decided to just let him stay out for a bit when Stanton called to tell me what was happening at the airport.  Of course I had to take the passport down to him, which meant asking a neighbor to find my dog and take him to my house and asking my mother in law to pick up the kids and do the crazy after school get ready for gymnastics rigamarole.  I was halfway out of town when I got a call from Stanton's dad offering to take the passport down for me.  I turned around in a flash!  I was so thankful to him.  Oh, and not 2 minutes after praying that Charlie would cooperate so my neighbor wouldn't have to spend a long time looking for him, she called to say she had found him and he was back safe at home.  Whew!  What a start to his trip!).
Aaaaannnnyyywwwwaaaaayyyy..... he made the bus ride up to the Gothic Lodge with all of the other guys, so all's well that ends well.

The ski trip was supposed to have 4 or 5 days of skiing, but the weather was so warm and the fresh snowfalls were so huge that they weren't even able to go out for the first 2/3 of the trip.  The avalanche danger was crazy high.  In fact, Stant took a few pictures of avalanches that they ended up skiing over later in the trip.
By the last couple of days, the avalanche danger had subsided, so they were able to ski.  And it was (I don't use this word ever...) epic skiing.  As they hopped out the of helicopter, they would sink into powder up to their armpits.  Once they got their skis on, they'd still sink to their knees or further.  It was technical skiing through trees, etc.  They had to ski the trees because the avalanche danger is much lower there.  They did get to ski the open bowls the last day and Stanton said it was awesome, but he was surprised at how much more he enjoyed the technical skiing in the trees.

The company they skiied with credited the first days of their trip, so guess what Stanton is going back to do next year?!  I love so much that he has a hobby that he is passionate about.  He is under so much pressure and stress at his job that it is awesome for him to have something he can look forward to to unwind and maybe stress in a different way.  It's been fun to watch him pick back up with skiing in the last few years.  Oh, and I had a ball with the kids that week, too.  They were so fun.

Here are some pictures from the trip.  They won't even remotely do justice to the experience, but maybe they'll jog a few memories for Stanton when he's old and grey.  :)

Some Very Disconnected Spirtual Thoughts From The Past Few Months

Sometimes I jot down thoughts during meetings or scripture study on the little Notes app on my phone.  I keep them all together, which is great, except that when I email them to myself, they appear very disjointed.  That's because they are, I suppose.  :)

Spiritual Thoughts

Partaking now is deed for word that I remember him, my Lord.

In word and deed he doth require my will to his, like son to sire, be made to bend, and I, as son, learn conduct from the Holy One.

Hymn 187, God Loved Us, So He Sent His Son

Doctrine & Covenants 50:23-25

And that which doth not edify is not of God, and is darkness.
That which is of God is light; and he that receiveth light, and continueth in God, receiveth more light, and that light groweth brighter and brighter until the perfect day.
And again, verily I say unto you, and I say it that you may know the truth, that you may chase darkness from among you.

The most important thing parents can do for their children is to build pathways and connections to heaven. -

In raising our family, we decided that our most important goal would be to help our children establish their own connection to heaven. (2012 April General Conference, “Only upon the Principles of Righteousness”, Sun. Afternoon Session - Larry Y. Wilson)

Reading in 3 Nephi Chapter 3 today April 16, 2013

I think it's interesting that after Gidiannhi threatened the people they appointed a prophet, Gidgiddoni, to lead their armies.

They recognized that even though Gidiannhi was wrong in his reasons for threatening them, he was still capable of hurting them. They recommitted to living right (repentance) and built up fortifications to protect themselves.

It doesn't matter that Satan is completely unjustified in what he does. He'll still do it. I have to be ready.

Conversations

I can't believe I haven't done a Converstaions post since August.  Good grief.  I also haven't been great at keeping track of conversations the past several months.  But there are a few gems, I'm sure.  :)

October

Cannon holding up his fingers:  Mom, which one is my swearing finger?

Cannon as everyone was wishing silly things on a star they saw: I wish that we'll be safe driving and that mom won't close the door while she's driving.

Cannon driving home from Chuck-a-Rama (I took the kids there during Priesthood session and they were awesome!):  Mom, after we get home, can we go back to Chuck-a-Rama?

Lily wishing on the same star:  I wish that I could be a chicken.

Lily as I was leaking milk (while nursing):  Mom, your milk's bleeding.

Me baby talking to Henry:  You're the cutest little baby on the earth right now Henry!
Cannon mimicking my baby talk:  Someday you're gonna die, Henry!
Me giving a "look" to Cannon....
Cannon:  Well, when he's a grown up.

Cannon recorded his own conversation:  Mom, um, she, um put Henery's blanket on Henery!

Brigham trying to figure out what we celebrate on Halloween: I think Halloween is when celebrate all the fairy tales.  No wait, it's when we celebrate all the people who died.  Oh wait, that's Memorial Day.

Me encouraging Cannon to get dressed:  Great!  Now get your new underwear on.
Cannon:  What?  Before it makes the world stinky?

Brigham after Stanton got home from elk hunting:  Mom, aren't you glad that Dad didn't get eaten by a wolf?

Chloe sleepily, when I was waking her up:  Waking up is my worst nightmare.

Lily tattletaling:  Cannon just said 'butt.'
Me:  Don't tattletale, Lil.
Cannon:  It's okay if you say it silly!

Cannon looking at the stormy sky:  Yup.  A storm is coming, alright.  It's coming from the mountains.

Me talking to Grandma Judy about tending Cannon for a half hour after preschool:  Thanks, Jud.
Cannon:  Wait!  Jude's gonna babysit me?

Lily leaning over while she and I sang "More Holiness Give Me" in church"More Holiness Give Me" is talking like Yoda.

Cannon:  I do not want Rocko Bama to be the president because he does not know President Monson is the prophet.
Theocentric, much?  :)

Me after the girls asked if I would help them move their pajamas from their closet to their dresser:  Why do you want to do that?
C & L:  Because we want to keep our closet open for stuff.
Me:  What kind of stuff?
Lily:  Super cool stuff, Mom.  You wouldn't understand.

Stanton:  Lily, who taught you to dip your french fry in a frosty?
Lily:  That lady who's sitting right next to you who's your wife.

Chloe to Brigham:  Fairies are real...aren't they Cannon?
Cannon:  Yes.  The TOOTH Fairy.
Brigham:  Dentists are the Tooth Fairy.

Cannon getting silly while singing I Love To See The Temple:  I like to see the temple...
Stanton:  You LIKE to see the temple?
Cannon:  Yes, singing, I want to KISS the temple.

Cannon while I was eating a piece of roast beef:  Mom, is that chocolate ham?

Chloe while Stanton and I were kissing:  Ugh, it's not even 11:11.

Lily looking at the clock - 2:21:  Aw, I wanted it to be 3:21.
Me:  Why?  Because you want to go to choir?
Lily:  No, I would've been fine if it was 1:23, as well.  And I'd be fine if it was 12:34.
See that math mind at work?  She wanted the numbers to be in order!

Showing Chloe's maturity lately.
I bought some new thermoses recently and Lily claimed the one that was maybe a little fancier looking.  Also, Lily needed a lunch box, but Chloe didn't, so Lily got a new one.  The one that was on sale was a really cute, decorative one, so I bought it...but Chloe's is just a very plain lunch box.  So twice she's gotten stuck with the not as fun stuff.
Lily couldn't stop talking about her cool new stuff.
Chloe:  Lily, I'm trying really hard not to be jealous because I don't want to be jealous.  So, can we stop talking about it?

November

Me discussing the election with Stanton:  Barack Obama definitely has the advantage in the Electoral College right now.
Cannon playing in another corner of the room:  No, Barack Obama has a mama.

A moment in Chloe's classroom that I want to remember.
I was chatting with another mom in the room whose youngest child is in Chloe's class.  She mentioned that her oldest daughter had just turned 16 and gone on her first date.  I got a shiver and thought, "Man, that's crazy to have a 16 year old and a 3rd grader."  Then I realized that that is EXACTLY what we'll have when Henry is in 3rd grade.  Crazy.  Shiver up my spine.  I know how quickly someone goes from baby to 3rd grade.  I can't imagine how fast the next 7 years are going to go by....

Henry does a cute thing when you run your finger down his nose and across his cheek -- his face wrinkles up like one of the bashful plants in Hawaii.  He gets a little wrinkle and gives a smile.

Cannon whispering VERY loud while Stanton was saying our family prayerNot a long one!!

Lily out of the blue:  Mom, I don't want gravity.

Lily: I have a question, Mom.  There's a girl in my class who says that Barack Obama cares about everybody and Mitt Romney only cares about the rich.  Another boy says ObamaCare stinks.
Isn't it interesting to hear that?  Kids totally soak in the things their parents talk about.  I need to remember to be ever more vigilant about being kind and respectful in my speech.

Brigham:  I'm glad to live in America because this is a land of the free.

Cannon immediately after waking up in the car:  What's 9+9?

Cannon to himself after he tripped over the cord of my sewing machine:   I have GOT to start watching where I'm going.

Brigham when he couldn't find his LEGO Ninjago book:  Dad, can I borrow your phone?
Stanton handed it to him.
Brigham activated Siri...:  Siri, do you know where my Ninjago book is?

Cannon found Brigham's book...it was stuck in the couch.  He saw the pages sticking out while walking by and brought it to Brigham.

Cannon:  Mom's the good cook and Dad's the good driver.

Cannon:  Mom!  You should be a chef when you grow up!

Cannon who took a piece of gum from the van without asking...and said this immediately upon coming back into the house...:  I didn't take any gum.
Me:  You little punk!  Where did you get it?
Cannon:  I took the barbecue gum from the van.
He meant the cinnamon gum.  Hehe!

Cannon:  Mom, how old are you?
Me:  I'm 33.
Cannon:  Whoa.  33 is like 100.

Cannon into my voice recorder:  I need to tell you something that's really bad, but really fun.  I made a Pilgrim hat.
He went through a phase where he loved to record his version of conversations on my phone...

Stanton as we were talking about gasses, liquids, and solids:  Who has the most gas in our family?
Almost everyone of our kids yelled out:  ME!!

Cannon while watching a Rachael Ray cooking show with me:  Mom, I wish I could go into that movie.
Me:  Me, too, Bud.
Cannon:  So that I could eat all the delicious food.

Brigham to Stanton:  Dad, why does Tyler like me so much?  Is it because I'm a lover?

Cannon distressed because his cold has made his voice scratchy:  Mom, I know why you lose your voice.
Me:  Why?
Cannon:  Because you swallow your boogers.

Chloe as the kids are playing some game where they 'rise up' as a band of kids:  We're fighting for justice, for freedom, and CHEESE.

Cannon another of his personal voice recordings:  I said to my mom, "At preschool we get to do lots of fun stuff and at Kindergarten we get to do boring stuff."

Brigham he made oatmeal for himself and forgot to put the water in.  He came in distraught because there wasn't anymore oatmeal...:  But at least Henry always makes me feel better.

December

Brigham:  What the?  I've had these underwear on since Jimmy & Rachel's!
That was three days, by the way).

Me:  We're going to see our cousins and Grandma and Grandpa Rose!  Hurry!
Cannon rushing around to get out the door suddenly pauses:  Wait.  Are you saying we're going to China?!
My brother and his family lived in China during this time.  :)

Me to the kids as we saw our neighbor Brother Nelson walking to church:  Doesn't he remind you guys of Grandpa Rose?
Cannon:  Actually, President Monson kind of reminds me of Grandpa Rose...because he's old.
sorry, Dad!!

Cannon interrupting Stanton who was telling the boys the rules of the motor home bunk while driving to Blackfoot:  And nobody can come up here because this is boys' business.

Lily:  Mom, almost every word comes from the Greek.
She has never seen My Big Fat Greek Wedding...

Cannon talking about Ebeneezer Scrooge:  Japanezer Scrooge.

Cannon:  Mom, what does "Wassie Singo Says" mean in Spanish?

Me to Cannon, who was being rowdy while we were reading scriptures:  Cannon, who is talking in the scriptures right now?
Cannon:  Heavenly Father?
Me: No.
Cannon:  Jesus?
Me: No.
Cannon:  YOU?

Lily to the boys who were mauling Henry:  Boys!  Stop!  You're going to make him catastrophobic!

January

Cannon to Stanton early in the morning: Dad, I need a massage.

Brigham:  Mom!  Look at Henry's hands!  They're humongously small!

Cannon mad at Brigham about something:  It's because you're full of ... questions, Brigham.

Lily:  Mom, asking me to unload the dishwasher is like asking a duck to go on a playdate with you.
Me:  ????
Lily:  What?  It's not a good idea!

Me:  Boys, don't play so rough with Henry.  Soon enough he'll be big enough to play with.
Cannon:  It's taking FOREVER for him to grow up!

Cannon saying a prayer before he left for school:  Thank Thee that nobody lives here when we're going on trips.

Cannon saying his personal prayers:  We know that God is the truest and that He is good and that He's the best and that He loves children.
Out of the mouths of babes, right?

Brigham on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day:  Mom, can we not do any jobs today?
Me:  Oh, we'll still have to do jobs, Bud.
Brigham:  But it's Martin Luther King day...and he made it free for us!

Cannon sneezing:  Mom, I have the bless-yous!

Lily to Chloe, who was teasing her:  I ain't care!

Cannon:  I don't want me to be Cannon when I grow up.
Me:  What do you want to be?  Fido?
Cannon:  John.

February

Cannon:  I can't believe it was Christmas already.

Cannon in church:  He said, 'Brothers and Sisters, thank you for being quiet during the sacrament,' but I wasn't quiet during the sacrament!

Cannon during the sacrament: Mom, next Christmas, can I have a Whoopie Cushion?

Brigham:  I'm a cotten-headed whoopie cushion.

Cannon eating a couple of no-bake cookies with his lunch:  Mom, open your mouth and close your eyes and I'll give you a big surprise.
I obeyed and he shoved an entire cookie into my mouth.
Pretty sweet that he shared one of his only two cookies with me!

Cannon while he and I were driving around town:  Mom, can we please turn off KSL News Radio?

Cannon while spelling his name:  Mom, my name should have a U instead of an O in it.
See what I mean about him being a bright little guy?

Brigham:  I wonder why boys like cool stuff and girls mostly like reverent stuff.

Me while snuggling with Cannon, talking about what he would be when he grew up - he said he was going to be a cowboy, so we talked all about what it would be like to be a cowboy, how many cows he would have, that he would have a motorcycle with a trailer on the back because he didn't want a truck, what he would wear, etc.:  Will you go to church when you're a cowboy?
Cannon in a no-duh voice:  Of CO-OURSE!

Cannon racing me:  The last one there is a very chicken baby egg!

I was whispering Articles of Faith to Cannon during the sacrament.  I'd repeat a word, he'd repeat a word.  After the 4th one, he said he was going to do one for me.
Cannon:  We.
Me:  We.
Cannon:  Believe.
Me:  Believe.
Cannon:  In.
Me:  In.
Cannon:  Teeth.

Cannon again, during the sacrament:  Is this, like, breakfast?

Brigham yet again, during the sacrament:  Why would anyone want to eat Jesus' skin?

Person bearing his testimony in church:  The Book of Mormon is the word of God.
Cannon:  BOO!  He said 'God!'

Cannon:  Mom, I have a SWELL idea.  If you exercise, the girls can watch you and then when Dad exercises, the boys can watch him.

Cannon was playing with Play-doh and making different objects.  He finished making a car and I challenged him to make a person.
Cannon in an excited voice:  Oooooh!  This is gonna be boring!

Brigham and Lily told me a story about seeing each other at first recess at school.
Brigham called out to Lily a few times, but she didn't hear him.  Finally she did and came over to say hello to him.  Here's the conversation they told me they had:
Lily:  If you need anything, you come and find me.  I'll be over by the trees.  If there are other girls around, don't be embarrassed.
Brigham:  Oh, I wouldn't ever be embarrassed to go see my sister!
These two bicker a lot at home, so this story really warmed my heart.

March

You know you live in Cache Valley when it's 33 degrees outside and your Cannon is singing,
"Springtime!  It's Springtime!  Springalingalingtime!

Cannon smiling at Henry:  Henry is so cute.
Me:  Yep.  He's the cutest baby in the whole wide world!
Cannon:  Yep.  And he also breathes fire.

I've been trying to help the kids say more meaningful personal prayers.  In particular, changing their words from "we're thankful" to "I'm thankful" so they will recognize that they are having a personal conversation with Heavenly Father...it seemed to sink in with Brigham one night.
Brigham:  I'm thankful that we have money and that we do allowance and that we get to put money in the bank.  And I'm thankful that we get to pay tithing and that Dad was able to find my gun and that Thou answered my prayer.

A particularly good Family Home Evening included a lesson on Integrity from Lily and I Am A Child of God, accompanied by Chloe on the piano.

Chloe while practicing spelling words:  Deceitful.  Oh crap!  How do you spell that? pause T H A T, that's how you spell that!
Ha!!

Lily trying to get her friend Zack to dance with her (they were playing together one afternoon and she already had him dressed up in one of Brigham's white shirts and ties) while Chloe accompanied on the piano.  He said he didn't want to.  Lily replied:
Come on!  Be a man!  Men dance with ladies!

April

Cannon praying:  We're grateful that everyone knows the truth...except those that say swear words.  Please bless that they'll be taught by the missionaries.
Note:  Cannon puts the emphasis on the "words" part of swear words.

Cannon on a different day (he's obviously thinking about his a lot lately):  Mom, did you know that the people who say swear words eat dirt, also.
Boy am I glad he wasn't old enough to remember all the swear words I said during the year when all four kids were not in school yet!

Cannon whose bum has been itchy lately because he hasn't been wiping well.  I was wiping him:  Ouch!  That hurts!
Me:  Well, to get your bum all clean, you have to wipe pretty hard - sometimes that hurts a little.
Later in the week:
Cannon:  Mom!  I think I wiped my bum good because IT HURT!!!
