I seriously can't believe we're at the beginning of another school year. I wish I could just slow down the calendar -- even just a little bit!
We attended back to school night last Wednesday and met each of the kids' teachers. Wow -- I think this might be our best year yet! I was so impressed with each teacher and feel like they were perfectly picked for my children. How grateful I am for teachers who dedicate their professional lives to education. They make such a tremendous difference in my children's lives!
Thursday morning, all four kids were up bright and early, ready for a great first day of school. They ended up being so on top of things that they left for school nearly a half hour early! I couldn't hold them off a second longer. :)
Cannon and I hung out outside our house watching all the neighborhood kids walking to class with their moms and dads and siblings. My heart was full to almost overflowing. We live in the best neighborhood!
I love these first day pictures of the kids. I can't believe how grown up they're becoming. When we moved in to this house, Chloe was just 2 1/2. Now she's 8 and in the third grade! It really doesn't seem like that much time has really passed. It's mind boggling.
When we moved here, Lily was just 15 months old. Now she's 7 and in the second grade.
And when we moved in, I was pregnant with Brigham. Now he's about to turn 6 and in the first grade. What happened?!
These kids are best buddies and so much fun. They had a wonderful first day and are going to have a fantastic school year.
Cannon doesn't start preschool until September, so I'll post first day pictures for him later. Meanwhile, this was his tragically hilarious response to the kids leaving him behind for school (and me not waiting for him to bring his scooter across the street).
We ended up having a pretty fun day together. :)
I'm very thankful for this crew of mine. They are great kids!

Back to School
Time is slipping through my fingers! The older three kids start school day after tomorrow. Chloe will be in 3rd grade, Lily in 2nd, and Brigham in 1st. Cannon will start preschool in September. Three in school all day. Craziness.
My friend, Sara, had a back to school dinner for her kids and I loved the idea so much, I decided to copy it. I ran to Walmart after Henry's Dr. appointment today and spent a million dollars on unnecessary school supplies (why are they so tempting????) and threw together a pretty fun dinner to celebrate this new school year. "I would send you a bouquet of freshly sharpened pencils."
(I also have to record that Chloe got about 3-4 inches trimmed off her hair today, too. We had to get rid of the green from swimming this summer. She was a really good sport about it - she loves her long hair and was really nervous to lose so much of it. It looks SOOOO much better, though. Lily got a trim, too. They love going to Cookie Cutters because the girls do pretty braids and twists in their hair. I wish I could French Braid Chloe's hair that well!)
The kids loved having a special dinner and enjoyed talking about what they were nervous and excited about for the new school year.
Stanton gave each child a blessing after dinner. I love that tradition.
Do you ever just look at your life for a second and realize how perfect it is? I have yelled and sworn at the kids way too much the last 2 days - my patience has been far too thin, but I look at these pictures and just can't believe how blessed I am. 5 amazing children. A hard working, kind husband. Access to the best education in the world....for free. A home with the Spirit of God dwelling in it. Love. Freedom. Life is so good and so rich.
Here's to a great 2012-13 school year!

A few more pictures
Stanton snapped these of Henry just a couple of days ago. He is this alert much of the day. We've had sleepy babies and alert babies, but Henry is definitely our most awake and aware. He is really content and loves to be snuggled in the Moby wrap.
I took him to the Dr. today for his 2 week visit. He's gained a pound from his lowest weight. 10 oz from his birth weight. He's eating well, sleeping decently, and just an angel. I'm thankful we're past the awful, horrible, want to punch a hole in the wall stage of breast feeding. I don't break out in a cold sweat every time he cries anymore. I'm so thankful for that!

Swim Lessons
Shout out to my friends Mandy Wilkinson and Shaynna Lamb for totally picking up ALL the slack for swim lessons. I never drove again (until performance day) after having Henry. I SO appreciate my great friends!
The kids had another great session with Miss Gin. They're becoming great swimmers!

Special Visitors
My Grandma Rose. She was darling with Henry! My aunt Sheri and Drake. I neglected to take a picture of my aunt Christie with Hen.
I love these grandparents! They are big fans and have been so helpful. My mom came down the Tuesday after Henry was born and spent 3 days helping me. Oh, how I appreciated her!
We've had a lot of visitors - friends, neighbors, family. We appreciate every one of them!

Happy Birthday, Cannon!!
We got home Wednesday afternoon. Trudy Day had taken the kids all day (Stanton went home and spent Tuesday night with them and then brought them up to the hospital on Wednesday morning before dropping them off at Trudy's). Angie Chandler, Trudy's daughter and my dear friend, took them for the afternoon so Stanton and I could run home and get prepared for Cannon's birthday. I was determined that he was going to be able to celebrate his birthday with us at home. No baby brother was going to take over his day!
My friend Abbie made cupcakes for us (thank you, Ab!!!!) and we got presents wrapped up quickly. We enjoyed dinner from Stanton's mom and dad and then Cannon opened his gifts. He received a dollar from Grandma J, new sneakers, an Optimus Prime Transformers costume, and a new bike for his big birthday. He was darling and very thankful for everything.
My mom and dad came two days later (my mom had already come down the night Hen was born and then driven all the way back home) to give Cannon his present and spend time with Henry. They gave him a new bike helmet.
Cannon is such the funnest little boy. I can't believe how grown up he is all of a sudden now that he's a big brother. He is funny, snuggly (although he seems as big as a giant now!), smart, and hilarious. We love our Cannon Baby Baby Cannon!
I love those eyes and those cheeks.

Baby Henry's Arrival
It's already been 2 weeks since Henry was born. Amazing how quickly time flies by with children.
I just wanted to get a few thoughts down about Henry's birth and all the stuff surrounding it.
I went to my 38 week appointment (I was 38 weeks + 3 days) with my doc on Tuesday morning the 7th. I had been progressing a centimeter a week for the past few weeks and we had discussed the possibility that perhaps I would be having him on Tuesday, but I honestly wasn't expecting or even hoping for that to happen. We had gone over to Bear Lake for the Bandito show at Pickleville on Monday night and I was having a lot of contractions. I think I knew in my heart that we were getting close, but I was living in denial. The kids had just started swim lessons and we were in the middle of carpools and busy lives. We weren't ready for a baby!
Well, I was 5 cm at my appointment and Dr. Noorda knew that I was going to go fast based on my previous birth experiences. Because I'd been having so many contractions and had progressed a centimeter since my previous visit, he advised me to be induced. He also made it very clear that he would completely support me if I chose not to be. I knew what was right and what needed to happen. I know my body and if I had waited, I would have been having an unplanned birth at home or in the car. I called Stanton, we talked it over for a minute or two and knew that this would be the day our little boy would come.
I called my friends with whom we were carpooling for swim lessons and they just jumped in to pick up where I was going to leave off, called Stanton's mom to see if she could watch kids after lessons, gathered up my hospital bag and got a few things packed up for the kids. After getting all of that squared away, I ran the swim lesson carpool one last time and went straight over to the hospital after.
Stanton finished up with the patients who were already in the office, cancelled all his afternoon appointments, and was at the hospital by about 12:30. Dr. Noorda came at 1:00 and broke my water. Immediately I went from a 5 to a 6. We knew we were going to make quick work of this delivery. I went for about a half hour, got an epidural, had a bit of pitocin, and hung out watching the Olympics. At about 3:00, my contractions started to get quite intense. My epidural took the edge off of them, but I was still having to breathe my way through them and really focus to get through each one. I have to note that we were watching the US women's volleyball team play during this time. At 3:20, near the end of their second set, I was in quite a lot of pain. And I knew it was getting very close to time to push. I told Stanton to get Dr. Noorda over to the hospital (his practice is just next door). The nurse came in and checked me and sure enough, I was 9 1/2 cm. Dr. Noorda came in at 3:30. I got ready to push and anticipated I'd have to push for 10-15 minutes - the same quick delivery as with Cannon. I was mentally and emotionally prepared. My contraction came and I breathed instead of pushing on the first try. Dr. Noorda reminded me to hold my breath and do what I knew how to do. I pushed for the first real time and Henry was here. Seriously. One push and his head was out. Another push and he was here. Less than 5 minutes of pushing. He was born at 3:36 pm (I looked up at the tv and the women had just lost their 3rd set). It was so incredible. Incredibly beautiful, but also incredibly overwhelming. I've shared this with many friends and family already, but it bears recording here. This pregnancy was the best I've ever experienced. This delivery was my fastest by far. I never really emotionally or mentally prepared myself for the fact that I was going to have an actual baby. When the nurse placed him on my chest right after he was born, I burst into tears. I bawled for a good 5-10 minutes holding him. I was filled with that pure relief that comes from delivering the baby and ridding your body of the intense pain and pressure of delivery. I was filled with absolute joy at the new life that was lying on my chest. And I was filled with pure astonishment that I now had 5 children - one of whom was a real living, breathing newborn baby boy. All of the emotion flooded me at once and I was a wreck!
After that flood of crazy subsided, I was able to really take in the miracle of little Henry's arrival. I'm so blessed to have such easy deliveries. I'm tremendously grateful for my doctor. He was supportive and just awesome. I'm so thankful for Stanton. He is honestly the best man. And oh, how blessed we are to have our little Henry here and healthy.
We were able to leave the hospital just 24 hours after Henry was born and headed home to get ready for Cannon's 4th birthday. Yes, their birthdays are just one day apart!
This was such a wonderful birth experience. I'm so thankful to be able to do it!
(The emotional breakdown moment)
And feeling so much better about all that lie ahead...
Super Dad!

Odds and Ends
Amazing how quickly I can get behind on the blog.
A few collages of things that have gone on around here lately.
We drove to Brigham City to visit my Grandma Rose at her care center. This was maybe a week before Henry was born? Also, we've had Olympic fever at our house. Lily made this gold medal, Brigham wanted a picture of him watching the Olympics through the mirror, and Cannon was doing something funny. Gold medal for him in that department! :)
We were brought so many wonderful meals after Henry was born. Oh, how we appreciated them!
We made our annual trip to Bear Lake for the Pickleville Playhouse Bandito show. Chloe hopped up on stage with a cute little girl and they danced their hearts out after the show. Chloe had NO fear, which was pretty cute to see.
The boys got bunk beds! Cannon had NO trouble at all switching from crib to bed. We knew he wouldn't, but it's still funny to me that he made it to his 4th birthday before we finally got him a real bed. :)
We're loving our baby Hen.
We've had quite a harvest this summer. Tons of produce and even an adorable baby!
We took the kids to Chuck E. Cheese's on Saturday as a final summer hoorah. It was a blast! The kids enjoyed every second and I have to admit that Stanton, Henry, and I did, too!

He's Here!
Little Henry made it here safely and quickly yesterday. Official stuff: Henry Stillman Allen (named after two pioneer grandfathers who crossed the plains to the Salt Lake Valley). Born at 3:36 pm. 7 lbs. 3 oz. and 19 1/2 inches.
He looks SO much like Chloe did at birth. Maybe they'll be little twinners -- she's not sure she wants another blonde child in our family ("I like being unique," says she...).
He has the cutest chin. Stanton and I both have dimples in our chins, but Henry is our first child to have one. It looks identical to mine.
He is nursing really well and is the cutest, sweetest little guy!!!

Can you believe we're having another Olympics baby??!!
Cannon turns 4 tomorrow- he was born on the opening day of the Bejing Olympics. Little Henry will be born today- August 7th. Right in the middle of the London Olympics.
I'm 6 cm (or was at last check over an hour ago). My water is broken, the epidural is happily at work, and all is well in Zion. :)
I think Stanton is sending a note to the blog, too.
See you later with pictures and more details!

Julie is going to have her baby today. She went to the doctor this morning and she was 5 cm dilated. The doctor decided that it would be good to get her to the hospital today to induce the labor. Right now she has had the epidural and the Pitocin drip and her water has broken. Soon the baby will start to come. Contractions are happening more and more frequently.

Various Items
*So, this has been the week of a million random contractions. Last Tuesday I was at 4 cm. and trucking along. I have another appointment tomorrow.
*Brigham had an eye appointment with Dr. Hammond. His right eye is now at 20/25 with his glasses on!!!! You'll remember that he started at 20/80 and then we had a huge plateau of about 6-8 months where he was stuck at 20/40. He's patching 4 hours a day and his eye is improving so dramatically. Hooray!!!
Because he'll be in school all day, he will have to wear his patch from the time he gets home till bedtime once school starts. That's sort of cruddy for him, but we definitely don't want to stop the patching now that he's actually making real progress. He's not thrilled, but he'll thank us one day...I hope. :)
*Charlie has been pooping in our house all of a sudden lately. He has one spot downstairs that he goes. I am beyond frustrated about it. I'm ready to kick him in the head. I wonder if he is aware that a big change is about to come to our home? At any rate, I'm going to have to get the gate out and keep him away from the basement. Or shoot him.
*The kids have swim lessons this week and next. Aren't I brilliant for scheduling them for the week and a half before I'm due??? Seriously. We have a carpool going with two other families that we're friends with. It's kind of crazy in the mornings getting kids ready, dropping off, and picking up. We'll get through it, though. The kids all do so well in lessons. I'm really proud of them.
*We've really enjoyed the Oympics this past week. It's incredible to see the speed of the track athletes (and oh, how I LOVE the long and triple jumpers!), the swimmers, the gymnasts, divers, volleyball players. All of it. Just incredible. And I hope my children never aspire to such things. Is that super weird? I just think it takes over your life and I don't want my kids' lives defined by such things. But wow am I ever thrilled to watch other people do it. Amazing stuff.
*Oh, and my washing machine is broken. When Stanton was in Las Vegas this weekend, it started to beep at me and smelled like an electrical burning smell. I was stressed that our house was going to burn down! Jimmy (Stanton's brother) came over and figured out that the smell was from plastic inside the tub that was melted (part of the rotating tub). I called Sears this morning and they're sending out a technician to check it out on Thursday. I was feeling kind of sorry for myself about the whole thing (what with the timing of it all), but then I had to slap myself because I have a second washer and dryer downstairs that we bought from some friends before they moved. I mean, can I really complain that my HE washer isn't working when I have a perfectly good older washer right downstairs??? Sure it's not as convenient, but honestly, I would be the biggest whiner on the planet if I really thought that I had it rough in any possible way. So now I'm just very thankful that I can keep up on laundry until my good one upstairs is fixed. Remarkable.
*We get to go to Pickleville Playhouse tonight for the Juanito Bandito show. The kids are jumping out of their skin. It's going to be really fun.

And with that, My Friends....
the blog is officially updated!
One sweet thing I need to record. The kids were watching the Olympics while I worked on the blog tonight. Stanton was not home, so they were just playing unsupervised. That's usually all fine and dandy, but they were getting very tired because it was after 8:00.
Lily and Brig were fighting, which ended up in Lily kicking him in the chest and him hitting her. Of course, I drew the line at violence, which meant that everyone was going to bed.
I calmly came into the room (believe me, that "calmly" part deserves recognition) and read a verse of the Book of Mormon with them (please tell me that sometimes you just do a verse so you can say you did it??) and we had prayer.
Lily was a WRECK as I tucked them in. She gets insanely emotional when she's tired and she was just bawling. I sweetly knelt with her during her prayers, tucked her in, tucked everyone else in, and came upstairs. Well, not two minutes later, she was on the intercom and Chloe was upstairs looking for her dollies. I have very little patience for kids who get out of bed after they've been tucked (you'd think I'd be a pro at that sort of patience because my kids do it almost every single night....). Well, I got ready to get after Lil over the intercom when she said, "Mom, will you just come sit on my bed and sing to me for a minute?"
It has been SO long since one of my children has requested I sing to them at bed time. Oh, how my heart melted. Yes, dear, I'll come sing to you.
I sat on her bed and sang a few Primary songs. What a blessing. I love these little ones.
And I just realized I forgot to do a recap of the Dave & Judy family reunion. Not done, Jul! :)
Edited to Add: HA! Done! Conquered! Except for the pictures I hope my mom sends me from the weekends the boys and the girls spent, respectively, at her house. And the few Family Reunion shots from my other camera. And the water park ones from Stanton's phone.
But aaannnyyywayyyyy, I'm feeling pretty good about life the blog at the moment. I think this is another piece of the pre-baby nesting puzzle. Get things updated enough that I can realistically put some pictures of Henry on here when he arrives... Yay!
And now I get to go face the kitchen and living room where the kids played while I blogged. Yes, I should have had them clean it up before bed, but guess what? I didn't. I just wanted them to get to sleep. So now I get to deal with it. I still stand by my choice. :)

April
Me: Chloe, what did you have for lunch today?
Chloe: I think it was sloppy joes.
Me: You think?
Chloe: Yeah. Let me check my shirt.

I made a reminder on my phone to talk about Stanton's new gun on the blog. I haven't done that. Oops. Well...he has a new gun (a rifle) and a scope and night vision goggles. And he's taking the Concealed Weapons Course tonight (August 2). Yep, I married a red neck. But I'll keep him. He's a great red neck. :)
Brigham: My bum is hurting...can I take a bath?
Me: Sure.
(He gets in the tub. A while later Cannon comes in...)
Cannon: Can I take a bath with you?
Brigham: Do you want to get my bum germs?
Cannon: NO. I want to take a bath with you.
Chloe and I were having a morning disagreement about piano practice...
Me: You really inherited my stubbornness with piano. I'm really sorry that you have to deal with this, but you're going to have to overcome it sooner than I did. I quit piano because of it.
Chloe (worried now): Am I going to have to quit piano because I inherited your stubbornness?
Brigham (saying family prayer): Thank Thee for all of our friends and family. Please bless our aunts and uncles and all of our family that they'll live for 200 weeks..."
Chloe and I were making dinner when Cannon started sticking his fingers in the brick of cheese Chloe was grating...
Me: Cannon! What are you doing???!! Stop!
Cannon: I'm making it Swiss Cheese!
Waiting outside the Jeep dealership waiting for Stanton to come out....
Brigham (to Cannon): Just look for somebody handsome.
(I agree!!)
Cannon (singing As A Child of God): I came to MARS with power to choose....
Brigham (as I put his eye patch on him): Mom, are you mad at yourself for making me wear my eye patch?
While we were eating dinner before the school's Medieval Fair...
Me (to Brigham): If you want to obey, you can go to the Medieval Fair with us. If you'd like to disobey, you can stay home.
Stanton: I'll stay home with you.
Chloe: Maybe we shouldn't tell him that Dad will stay home with him because if he does, he's going to clean his gun with him...
Cannon (same night): I want to go to the EVIL Fair...now.
Cannon: Dad, when will I ever grow taller?
Brigham (pulling into the Richmond Cemetery on Memorial Day): YAY! I can't wait to see my old grandpa who's dead!
Stanton (after Cannon crawled into our bed in the morning): Oh, Cannon, you're such a good boy. I love you so much.
Cannon: But I eat too much candy.
Brigham: What's the opposite of two?
Me: I don't think two has an opposite.
Brigham: Uh, yes it does. One. Don't you even have a mind?
(Sass is that boy's middle name right now. Ugh.)
June
Stanton (to Cannon on our hike to the Wind Caves): Be careful, Bud.
Cannon: Don't worry. I won't.
Chloe (while we were going downhill from our Wind Caves hike): My feet are growing out of my shoes while we walk down this hike!
Brigham: Mom, are you the only one who is part of the Allen family who is also part of the Rose family?
Me: Well, you guys are part of the Rose family too, but I'm the only one whose last name used to be Rose.
Brigham: Yeah, but we're mostly part of the Allen Family because our last name is Allen....Awkward!
Cannon: Mom, don't you wish we had a pet pig? And that he could give us ham?
(I wonder if he thinks pigs "lay" ham like chickens lay eggs?)
Cannon (trying to say "grasshopper"): Graphosser.
Lily: How do you say English in Spanish?
Me: Englais
Cannon: NO. You say, "My Grandma's Underpants."
Cannon: I'm gonna count to one. One.
Brigham: Who wants to play "Nourishing House?"
(I found out later that that is what he calls the Nursing Home....CUTE!)
Brigham (praying the day after Grandma Barbara died): Please bless Grandma Barbara that she can have a great time in Heaven World.
Brigham (after scraping a scab off his arm while jumping off the couch at his friend's house *she claims that this is something she is completely okay with.* Brigham came upstairs very distressed): This is bad. This is very, very bad. I might need stitches!
Friend's Dad, Michael W. (who happens to be an MD Oral Surgeon): I think it's going to be okay. Let's wash it off.
Brigham: I don't think you know what you're talking about.
Michael: No, really. I'm a doctor.
Brigham (to friend's mom): Mandy, is he telling the truth?
Brigham (to Charlie, who was wanting to see what Brig was doing): Charlie, get away. This is none of your beeswax...or should I say, Dogwax...
Cannon: Why did the chicken cross the road?
Me: I don't know, why?
Cannon: Because he wanted to get eaten by a monster and a pig.
(I didn't record which kid said this!!!): What color are moths when nobody sees them flying in the sky?
July
Brigham (trying to get Chloe to look at him): Hey, over here. It's Brigham. The one who doesn't do very funny Knock Knock jokes...
Lily (when she got in our inflatable raft at Tony Grove Lake): Is this safe? Is this safe? Dad, do you know what you're doing??
Me: Cannon, your shoes are on the wrong feet.
Cannon: Mom. I'm the boss of these.
Brigham (at about 4 weeks till the end of my pregnancy): Mom, why do you wear the same clothes every day?
Cannon: Mom, are you medium size?
Me: Yes.
Cannon: Is Chloe tall?
Me: Yes.
Cannon: Is Brigham medium?
Me: Yes. What about you?
Cannon: I'm small!
Me: What about Baby Henry?
Cannon (giggling): He's really, REALLY small.
Lily: Is Stillman Pond my anCESTOR or my anBROTHER?
Brigham: Mom, is gum your favorite food because you can talk while you eat it?
Cannon (upset that Brigham wouldn't share his last piece of salt water taffy, but buckled in his car seat so he couldn't do anything about it): Brigham, hit yourself!
Chloe (trying to make Cannon happy after the salt water taffy incident): Cannon, here have a dollar instead.
Cannon: No! I HATE dollars!
Cannon (to Cindy after leaving the water park): I wish I had caught a bird and that it was a wood pecker.
Brigham (during our cheapy fireworks display...noticing a pattern in the way Stanton was letting them off): Wait a minute! They keep on getting bigger and bigger!
Cannon: Mom, will you come wipe me?
I will come get ready to wipe him...
Cannon: No. "Will you come wipe me" means "Come sit on the bathtub and talk to me."
(Yeah, he takes after his daddy!)
Lily: Mom, everything's made in China these days.
Cannon: It's bad if you get people's germs on you because then you turn into them.
Lily (pointing to Uncle Brad at the family reunion): What is his name again? Uncle Brat?
Cannon: I wish I was a pig....
August
Brigham (to Mandy W, who drew the line at 2 popsicles per boy): I don't know how to tell you this, but my mom always lets us have three popsicles...
(I'm so proud of the pathological liar I'm raising!)
Brigham (upset at Lily, who is cheering for the USA and Brazil in some event - mostly just to provoke Brig): Lily, don't you love the place you live??? Cache Valley is the most beautiful place on EARTH!
Cannon: How big am I getting again? Oh, yeah, I'm getting so big I can't even believe I'm so small.
Me: Chloe, what did you have for lunch today?
Chloe: I think it was sloppy joes.
Me: You think?
Chloe: Yeah. Let me check my shirt.

My Life in Status Updates
I wonder if Facebook will even exist when my kids are grown and read this blog?? Maybe it will just be a strange relic from the past like laser discs and 8-tracks.
Well, it's been where I've dumped the majority of my thoughts lately - it has seemed a million times easier than blogging. That's what happens when you get behind.
I thought I'd do a recap of those various thoughts here on the blog, though...just for a glimpse of day to day life and thoughts around here.
June 2
"One up at 5:39 and the rest up by 6:18. What is wrong with my children? This is no way to start summer vacation! I should be used to it, though. Cannon and Brigham are always up by 6:30..."
June 4
"I really love the nesting instinct--- and I'm officially pooped!!"
June 5
"Sometimes I just have to appreciate Facebook!
I just found the first person I ever taught as a missionary in Ohio. Incredible after years of wondering what happened to him to find him at the click of a mouse!"
June 6
"Do you ever feel like life is a tilt-a-whirl?
I am loving summer break with the kids, but feel like all we did was get more busy!"
June 7
I have to give a shout out to my wonderful high school debate teacher, Lenora Hansen.
I had to pinch hit on a presentation to the City of Logan regarding the fundraiser we are in the midst of organizing. With 15 minutes to look over materials and prepare, I was able to give the presentation and get done what needed to be done!
And I'm THRILLED to finally be able to announce the date of our Project Nico fundraiser::
June 23rd at the ELC in Logan!
Comment if you'd like to be involved in any way!"
June10
"Ever have that strange realization that YOU'RE the grown-up now?!"
June 11
"The good news is I found the mystery smell in the basement and it didn't require cutting into any walls. (it was a mildewy rag that had been put in a garbage can downstairs)
The bad news? While I was obsessing over that, the kids were playing in the sprinklers (fine) and let the very wet dog into the house- where he proceeded to shake all over everything!
Yep, can't win for losin'!
No, really the scales tip way over into the good news zone. Wet dog can be easily fixed!"
June 12
"Family, family, family. There isn't a thing more important."
June 12 (again)
"Pregnancy back ache has set in suddenly and with a vengeance today. Ugh! But so very worth it!"
June 13
"Ongoing debate with my stubborn 8 year old-- the definitions of palindrome and onomatopoeia. She has them mixed up and refuses to admit it-- even after looking them up in the dictionary, she claims the dictionary is wrong. Oh my!!!"
June 13
"Stanton's dear Grandma Barbara Anderson passed away last night. While it was a blessing and a joyous release from the body that was holding her back for the last several months/years, there is always sadness that accompanies it.
Brigham was praying at lunch today and said, " Please bless Grandma Barbara that she can have a great time in Heaven-land."
I couldn't have said it better myself. I hope her reunion with the parents she loved so dearly is a sweet one."
June 14 (two posts on this day)
"Nico is in the paper!! We're so excited for this opportunity to show him just how loved he is. Bring your items to donate and then come shop and bid on Saturday the 23rd!!"
"Chloe, Alice, and Lily are out selling lemonade for Nico-- come buy some if you have a minute (and some spare change)!
Full disclosure- Chloe and Lily are working to earn money for Nico shirts -- but all the proceeds from those DO go to Nico!!! :)"
June 15
"Okay, all those years of radio speaking competitions, DON'T let me down!!" (I did a brief interview with our local news radio station)
and
"Looking forward to escaping for a while for a date night with Stanton and the Westfalls.
Thanks to SO many who are helping with Nico's fundraiser.
And so much love to Stanton's family readying for Grandma's funeral."
June 18
"One wonderful gift that comes from the end of a long mortal journey is the opportunity to spend extra time with family and loved ones.
Looking forward to that beginning tonight and continuing through tomorrow!
Love you, G Barb."
June 19
"After a horrible night of pregnancy insomnia night before last, I took matters into my own hands. :)
My solution to restless legs and crazy hot feet? Shower before bed (so my wet hair cools me off) and an ice pack under the covers near my feet. I slept on top of the covers with my own blanket and every time I'd wake up with crazy hot feet, I'd find that pack and instant relief!
Yeah, they say that necessity is the mother of invention, but I'm pretty sure it's really the last two months of pregnancy that are the mother of invention!"
June 20
"Oh, how I LOVE watching my girls play baseball!"
...As well as 3 other Nico-related posts...
June 21
"Yahoo! We just picked up an entire trailer load of furniture and other items (including quite a nice table, chairs, and bench set) from one couple in River Heights!!
Can you do even better??!
Come and shop on Saturday. There will be plenty to go around!!"
3 other Nico posts...including:
"Alright, we got a lot of stuff tonight-- thank you!!!!!! BUT, we could use double (or triple!) what we got.
Please donate at the ELC tomorrow!! There will be people there most of the day - just give me a call! 435-213-0585.
Or without calling, you can drop off any time from 3-8 pm.
1544 N 200 W in Logan.
If you need to arrange for a pick up, call me or call Trudy Day. Her number is..."
June 22
"I am just completely stunned at the amount of donations that came in today.
And at the amount of help we had pricing and organizing.
And at the amount of people we had to turn away because the sale doesn't start until 8:00 tomorrow morning.
It is all just amazing.
If you're volunteering tomorrow, please be at the ELC no later than 7:00 am.
And please, come shop! There is a lot of really great stuff! Not to mention the silent auction and the concessions and the Nico t-Shirts. It's going to be awesome!! Music, food, auction, yard sale-- all of it!! It's definitely a 'must-see' event!"
June 23
"Whew!!!!!! What a day!
So many thanks to the MANY people who came to help today. Honestly. We couldn't have pulled it off without you!!!
Great traffic al day long!! Stanton was an awesome MC and kept everyone buzzing all morning and afternoon.
Seriously-- THANK YOU."
(As you can see, the Nico fundraiser dominated my thoughts during the latter part of June...that and Grandma Barbara's passing...)
June 24
"Hey choir friends! Did you forget we're singing today at church? I did, too!
But, phew!, I remembered before our 10:30 practice time.
Hope to see you then!"
and
"It had to be done. My children just had to get to bed by 6:53 tonight. If you were in sacrament meeting with our family today, you might empathize with just why that was a necessity. :)"
June 25 (my birthday!)
"Facebook asked me "What's the best thing that happened to you today?" Well, it has been a great day. A trip to the bank to deposit our earnings from Saturday's fundraiser, gifted babysitting from Madie Siddoway while I got a pedicure, a two hour nap while my kids played together, and lots of messages from all my Facebook friends!
The best way to top it off would be to see you at Costa Vida at 5:30!
(They held a Nico night where a dollar from every burrito they sold was donated to Nico)
June 26
"I'm thinking my kiddos and I will hit the Aquatic Center sometime today. Does it work for any of you Cache Valley pals? It would be fun to go with friends!"
and
"You know what I adore? That my children don't need to take buddies to the pool. They LOVE together. And I love watching them.
Also, I love ice cream. :)"
and
"*yawn....."
June 27
"I would very much like to close my eyes and open them to a clean kitchen where the groceries are put away (you know, the ones I brought home 4 hours ago) and the dishes are done.
Egads, I am tired and out of motivation!"
June 28
"While it will be great when Stanton's jeep is out of the shop, I have to admit that driving him to work all morning this week has been nice. A little extra time to be together and laugh is never a bad thing!"
and
"Thank you to the neighborhood good samaritan who wheeled my garbage can out to the curb. I totally forgot!
Thank you!"
June 29
"Heaven help us-- we're taking our girls to a 9:00 movie. Stanton and I don't get even go this late!" (The boys were visiting my parents and we took Chloe and Lily to Brave -- it turned out well!)
June 30
"Is there anything more beautiful than a freshly weeded and tilled garden?? Our corn is up to my waist in some places.
There is something soul fulfilling about growing a garden, isn't there??"
July 1
"How have I not read Jane Eyre till now? What a beautiful book!!"
July 2
"I absolutely love days that don't go how I plan them. This one in particular--- got to make a crazy fast trip to the SLC airport today to welcome home the Webbs - who arrived home after two years in Singapore.
That was followed by playin at the park with Em and her kids and is ended by a birthday party for niece Katie!
Nothing was planned and all of it is welcomed!"
July 3
"*yawn...I wonder if I'll stay awake for the fireworks? This pregnant gal is tired!" (we did!)
July 4
"Headed to Brigham City to see Grandma Rose!"
and
"Do you ever just scan a new recipe quickly while you're in the grocery store, buy all the ingredients, only to go home and realize that it is WAY more time consuming than you anticipated (but would have easily discovered had you read the recipe all the way through)?
That would be me with this peach ice cream today. There's no turning back now, but I'm planning to cut out about 12 hours of the chilling time it calls for -- I hope it still freezes smoothly! Ha!
Happy 4th, Friends!"
July 5
"Reading Anna Karenina whilst taking the kids to Zookeeper. I'm only hoping for a net break-even in brain cells lost/gained. :)"
and
"Good girls for not having their phones!! I seriously just texted four different young women to tend for me and none of them replied--- yeah, that's because they're at girls' camp!! Duh!!"
July 8
"Do you remember those plates that we made in elementary school? The ones where we drew a picture and it transferred to a melamine plate?
I'd love to do something along those lines with my kids. Any ideas??"
July 10
"Finally getting a chance to lay down and read. As it is nearly 10:00, though, I don't have high expectations for length of time I might actually stay awake!
As for what I'm reading, I decided to buckle down and finish Anna Karenina. I'm halfway through now and it's on my mind constantly! Great book so far. Giant, wordy, complex great book."
July 12
"I love my dog. Seriously.
That being said, when he pulls a loaf of rising bread off my counter onto the floor, I want to smack him!
Then he makes my heart melt again when he puts himself in time out for it.
All you need is love....and a dog. :)"
July 13
"Talk to me about RVs at Tony Grove campground. Will a 29 footer be okay up there?
Do we need to make reservations in advance?
If so, how do I do that??
Itching to get out of Dodge today...."
then
"Preparing to go relax for a day or two sure isn't very relaxing."
and finally,
"We enjoyed a beautiful, relaxing, satisfying, rejuvenating day at Tony Grove. And since there are campfire restrictions at all campgrounds up there, we decided to come home and roast marshmallows and hot dogs in our backyard fire pit. And Stanton is going to sleep out with the kids tonight.
Pretty great little family stay-cation on the spur of the moment.
Of course, all that work getting ready for it might have been avoided had we decided our plan a bit sooner-- but where's the fun in that??!! :)" (We know how the sleeping out part went...)
July 14
"Do you think 3D will go out of fashion???
Also, do you think I'm an old fuddy duddy for hating 3D?
And for saying "go out of fashion?"
And for saying "old fuddy duddy?"
And for not knowing how to finish this status update?"
July 16
"I am so grateful to be growing a new little human inside of me. It is a true miracle.
That being said, it is a miracle that includes some pretty frustrating side notes: sciatic pain radiating down from my bum to my knee tonight, hourly trips to the bathroom at night, and serious lodged elbow or foot in my rib pain to name a few.
I am trying to be thankful for all the crap parts of pregnancy because they all boil down to the one miraculous truth that I am pregnant and about to welcome another little miracle into my heart and home.
But will you just feel sorry for my achy bum tonight, please? :)
July 17
"What amazing person put a half gallon of Gossner's chocolate ice cream in my freezer???????
It's an eighth month of pregnancy miracle!!"
July 18
"I have a sweet little almost 4 year old who has been up all night (excepting 3 1/2 glorious hours between 3:00 and 6:30 am) with a painful ear. :(
Hope the doc can see him first thing." (He did and it was an ear infection with a ruptured ear drum - yuck!)
then
"I have the best friends in the world.
Without even knowing what our night was like, two of them showed up with their crews to weed my planting beds. They would've gotten away with it if it wasn't for that pesky guard dog of mine!
Actually, I still totally let them get away with it.
Thank you, Al and Ab!"
and finally
"I know my status updates have been really frequent and all over the place the past few days. I'm annoying even myself. :)
BUT, do you ever make something you've made several times before and all of a sudden the ingredients seem totally unfamiliar...to the point where you check the recipe source several times to make sure you're even making the same thing?? My tired brain is doing that to me tonight." (I was making barbecue sauce)
July 19
"Finished Anna Karenina today, dinner tonight with the Farleys, picking up my girls from Grandma's tomorrow, and my mission reunion on Saturday! Good weekend? I say YES!"
July 20
"What on earth would we moms do without pancakes as a viable dinner option?!"
July 22
"Baby related items are definitely NOT my favorite way to spend money. Selfish much?"
July 24
"We thought about keeping everyone up for fireworks...really, we did! But after a parade in the morning and the entire afternoon spent at a water park in Pocatello (plus all that driving), we're all pooped! Guess they'll just get to listen to them in their dreams. :)"
July 25
"Sometimes I'd like to turn on the TV to keep my kids out of the way and do all the housework myself. I know it would take less time.
Why must I feel so responsible for their learning the value of work???
I guess because it's my JOB? :)"
July 26
"Step away from the licorice and popsicles, Jul. you're making yourself sick!"
July 27
"Do any of you great people in my circle have a Moby wrap that you're interested in selling?"
and
"Rose family reunion at the Wilson's! The kids have been playing in the pool for 3 hours and there's no end in sight. Good life. :)"
July 29
"Could you make the commitment (as a parent) necessary to get a child to the Olympics?? I'm pretty sure I couldn't." (This sparked a HUGE comment thread that was so interesting to engage in).
July 30 (this was on Stanton's birthday -- no mention of it whatsoever! On Facebook OR the blog!)
"Lindsay Payne Hunsaker -- we just got our tickets for the Brigham City temple open house! September 14th at 10:30 am. Any chance you'll be able to join us?"
followed by
"Super embarrassed to admit that I sort of hope the other countries have huge mistakes to give these American gymnasts a chance to medal!"
July 31
"Planned the menu, shopped for the groceries....don't feel like cooking..." (We ended up eating cold cereal...)
and
"Swimming spoiler ahead--- read on at your own risk!!!
K. We had a moment of disappointment watching Phelps come in 2nd in the 100 m. fly, but then they showed the gold medalist's daddy with their country's flag. All of a sudden, Stanton and I were both, "GO WORLD!!!
I love that about the Olympics!
Same with Great Britain in gymnastics last night. Love it!" (obviously the London Summer Olympics are in full swing)
July 17

It's an eighth month of pregnancy miracle!!"
July 18
"I have a sweet little almost 4 year old who has been up all night (excepting 3 1/2 glorious hours between 3:00 and 6:30 am) with a painful ear. :(
Hope the doc can see him first thing." (He did and it was an ear infection with a ruptured ear drum - yuck!)
then

July 19

July 20
"What on earth would we moms do without pancakes as a viable dinner option?!"
July 22

Why must I feel so responsible for their learning the value of work???
I guess because it's my JOB? :)"
July 26
"Step away from the licorice and popsicles, Jul. you're making yourself sick!"
July 27
"Do any of you great people in my circle have a Moby wrap that you're interested in selling?"
and
"Rose family reunion at the Wilson's! The kids have been playing in the pool for 3 hours and there's no end in sight. Good life. :)"
July 29

August 1
"Nesting--Round 2" has begun and not a moment too soon, as I'm 2 1/2 weeks away from my due date.
On that note, how do you organize your mini van? We'll have 3 across
the front now, with 2 in the back. One of the front (middle) sitters
will be able to control the DVD player, temperature, etc.
SO, how do you organize your DVDs, books, necessities, etc. in your van????"
and
"Chloe has her first cleaning job today. She's cleaning 3 bathrooms for Angie Day Chandler!
We went through a checklist and practice cleaned our bathroom from top
to bottom to make sure she remembered all the steps. She did a GREAT
job! And the best part was the satisfaction on her face when she saw
how great the bathroom looked when she finished. Love it!"
And today, August 2
"People.
It has been over a year since I've had my hair cut or highlighted. On a
whim, I made an appointment today and got it done. I have a new lease
on life that I didn't even know I needed! Hallelujah!!!!"
followed by a picture with the following caption: See, it's not really "new," just fixed. - several friends had asked for a picture of my "new" hairdo...
Ohio Columbus Mission Reunion
The last weekend in July, my mission president came to Utah from California. We had a great reunion. They scheduled 3 days' worth of events to accommodate the various schedules people had. We ended up only attending the family park day on Saturday, but it was delightful. I was able to reconnect with an old companion, see missionaries that were friends, and even meet some people that Stanton knew better than me (he served his mission in Columbus 4 years before me and then went back to OSU for dental school - he went out with the missionaries a LOT during his first year of dental school). It was a great afternoon.
I'm so thankful to President and Sister Sharp for helping me become a much better person during my 18 months in Ohio. They were kind, patient, firm, and loving. I love them.
Sister Krista Olson and me. She is a fellow Idahoan and we knew each other at Ricks before the mission. She was a great companion! And can we just discuss WHY this woman is not married?????? It baffles me. Guys! WISE UP!
Kylie, Christine, and Bob Sharp. Stanton and me. Seriously, Kylie was 8 when I was on the mission -- she's headed to BYU this fall! I love these two. So thankful to have been able to see them again.

Pioneer Day
I love Utah's state celebration of the pioneers. Love it. I missed it so much when we lived in Ohio and New York. We make sure to join in the festivities every year.
This year, the kids rode on our Primary's float - they all wore their Nico shirts, which was awesome. It was fun to watch all four kids on the float...but I missed having them with us! I don't think my kids have actually SEEN very many parades...they're always IN them! I've got to change that. :)
And my absolute FAVORITE part of the parade every year is the Stevens family. They have 12 children and a million grandchildren. They all dress up in Pioneer clothes, pull hand carts, and play old songs on their brass instruments. It makes me tear up EVERY YEAR and when I see them I want to have a dozen kids and have them all learn how to play the trumpet. I LOVE IT!!!!!
After the parade, we ran home, got our swimsuits packed up and headed to Pocatello for my dad's company party. His company is so cool. Even though they're in Idaho, they hold their company party every year on the 24th so their employees can have the day off. They invite all the families of the employees to a water park and provide lunch and water park tickets. It is just awesome. Seriously. What company pays for the grandchildren of its employees to swim and play at a water park all day???? THANK YOU, Idaho Ag Credit!!! And thanks, Dad, for inviting us every year!
I took a couple of pictures of our time at the park on Stanton's phone. I'll have to grab them and put them on when he gets home....
After we got home, we bought a cheap-o pack of fireworks and did our traditional broad daylight fireworks show. The kids weren't nearly as impressed as they used to be. :) But they were so exhausted from such a full day that we couldn't justify letting them stay up past 10:00 for another night of fireworks. It ended up being really fun and the pizza we had for dinner made them plenty happy (what is it about kids and Little Caesar's???). We even had some spectators from the neighbor's yard. :)

Dave & Judy Family Reunion
Guess who is HOME?????? Scott and Julie and all the Singawebbs are HOME!!!!! It's been a long two years not seeing them and it was WONDERFUL to spend 2 days with them while they were here visiting Dave and Judy.
We had a fun Saturday with taco salad and the big ol' waterslide. We rented one last year and got surprised this year by an even bigger one. It was so much fun for the kids.
I'm still trying to figure out what Cannon is doing with his hand to his nose like that.
The kids LOVE LOVE LOVE when Judy goes down the slide with them. Fun Grandma!!!
It is always pure heaven to be together with the Allen family. I'm so grateful to have married into such a fantastic family!

Tony Grove Wildflowers
The wildflowers for which Tony Grove is famous were in full bloom when we went for our day trip. They were GORGEOUS.
Any idea what that giant spider-looking bug is on the center picture? It was big and hairy and very cool looking. I'm glad my lens zooms some, though. I wasn't real thrilled at the idea of getting too up close and personal with it. :)
Aren't these flowers beautiful??

Independence Day
We had a lovely Independence Day. We started the morning off with jobs (no freedom from those -- mwhahaha!), then went to Brigham City to visit my grandma, came home and had a cookout with our friends the Wilkinsons, and ended the night with fireworks. Actually, I think those events were spread over two days, but hey, when you're playing catch up, specificity is sometimes lost. :)
Day Trip to Tony Grove
We packed up the motor home with the intention of possibly spending the night near Tony Grove with the kids. We ended up coming home, but wow was it a great day! Just SO nice to get out of the Valley and away from real life for a bit.
Stanton bought an inflatable raft and took the kids out on the lake. They LOVED it. Lily was really excited at the idea, then terrified once she got in, then totally in love by the time they were done. The kids all played in the lake (COLD!), explored, went on scavenger hunts, dressed up the dog, and thoroughly enjoyed nature.
I went on a walk around the lake with Charlie and took seven million pictures of flowers, the mountains, and the family. And I liked 'em all so much, I didn't want to collage them.
What a day well spent!
Tony Grove is several miles into Logan Canyon (right about the same distance as Beaver Mountain). It has a much higher elevation than the Valley and, as a result, much cooler temperatures. It's a beautiful place. Absolutely beautiful.
Do you see Lily's stressed face?? Funny. :)
Just breathtaking. I love that God has such good taste.
I'm going to frame this one. Love. It.
We got the ideal parking place right on the lake. The view couldn't be beat and the convenience was awesome.
Chloe put Charlie in Brigham's hoodie. I was pretty much dying over the cuteness. Charlie is a keeper.
Those paws!!!
I mean, seriously. Have you ever seen a cuter dog? No. No you have not.
I'm pretty sure there aren't cuter kids around, either.
We came home and roasted hot dogs and marshmallows in the backyard fire pit. It was hot and fun.
Lily has since lost her other front tooth. Cutie!
Watermelon, marshmallows, hot dogs, and root beer for dinner? A 3 year old's ideal meal, I'd say!
Stanton was planning to sleep outside with the kids, but it ended up blowing like crazy with a rain storm swooping in right at bedtime, so we called it a night, had showers, and slept comfortably in our own beds. We love not camping. :)
